Day 3: The Events
The Florida-Georgia rivalry brings in so much more than just a football game. Fans from two states come to Jacksonville to celebrate college football’s biggest rivalry.
A time-honored tradition since 1933, the celebration has expanded to almost an entire week of events to honor both Florida and Georgia greats.
Hall of Fame Luncheon
You know this rivalry is rich in history when there is a Hall of Fame created to honor the teams’ greats. The Jacksonville Sports and Entertainment Office created the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame in 1995 to acknowledge the many great records, performances, career highlights, and outstanding memories that have made this rivalry one of college football’s best traditions.
Notable Florida Gator Hall of Famers include Tim Tebow, Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Doering, Fred Taylor, and countless others.
The 2019 Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame Inductees for Florida are Alex Brown and Percy Harvin. The Georgia inductees are Aaron Murphy and Boss Bailey.
The Hall of Fame Luncheon will be held at 12 pm on Friday, October 26 at the US Assure West Club at EverBank Field. Visit the official site for more details.
Friday Night Concert
Every year the City of Jacksonville hosts a free concert for the fans coming to Florida-Georgia. In years past, these concerts were held at the Jacksonville Landing, a riverfront plaza facing the St. Johns River. Previous concerts have featured the Florida Georgia Line, the Band Perry, Sister Hazel, and others.
The 2018 Friday night concert features Corey Smith and will be held at Daily’s Place Flex Field. This is a free concert with food and drinks available for purchase. The gates open at 3 pm with the concert beginning at 6 pm.
Live Music at the Jacksonville Landing
But because of an August 26 mass shooting at a video game conference tournament at the GLHF Game Bar, there has been some indecision by the City of Jacksonville about the concerts being held at The Jacksonville Landing.
However, the Jacksonville Landing’s website is showing several concerts and watch parties for the Florida-Georgia weekend. There is a $10 entrance fee on Friday and Saturday.
The Fan Experience at Daily’s Place
Daily’s Place was newly built in 2017. This covered flex-facility hosts the Jaguars practice. They are also hosting a few new of the Florida-Georgia weekend events. The first event is the Friday night concert mentioned above.
The second event is the Fan Experience tailgating party. This is hosted at both Daily’s Place Flex Field and around the Sports Complex. It starts on game day at 9 am and runs until halftime. Around the Sports Complex, there will have interactive experiences, free giveaways, food vendors and food trucks and non-alcoholic beverages. The Daily’s Place Flex Field will have additional tailgating games and jumbotron to watch the game until halftime.
The Actual Game
This is probably the most important part of this weekend—the game! It is usually set to kick off at 3:30 pm every year.
While about 80,000 fans make their way into the stadium, there about another 70,000 that stay outside the stadium to watch.
I have only been to about half a dozen Florida-Georgia weekends and have only made it into two of the games! Most of the time, we tailgate outside the stadium and enjoy the atmosphere (and often good weather). Most non-college football fans don’t understand this.
